It's Here!!!! Ode to my joy!

My camera has arrived!!!!  I can finally take pretty pictures for you all again! It's like Christmas or my birthday.

"These photographs keep me alive!" - Joshua Radin

Photographs are my prized possessions.   They freeze moments in time.  Photos evoke memories that would have otherwise been forgotten.  They can be shared with people who weren't even there.  I enjoy capturing these moments for other people and maybe one day might even make a full-time living doing it.  Ahhh... to dream.

All this excitement calls for a playlist celebration!

It is a random mix including Jack Johnson, Robert Ellis, Joshua Radin, Spoon, Memphis and Breathe Owl Breathe.  Something there for everyone! Enjoy!

Holy Tambourine! - The McCrary Sisters

Free concert?  Yes, please! Nashville has free concerts all the time.  Currently the "Nashville Dancin'" series is happening on Thursday nights.  Since I have friends visiting from out of town, I thought it would be fun to show them how awesome and active Nashville is.  Last night it was Shooter JenningsRoyal Southern BrotherhoodMcCrary SistersRaelyn Nelson and Britt Ronstadt.

Photo by Storme Warren - click here to see his Tweet

The McCrary Sisters sing what I would call a Gospel Blues Americana, so it's not really my cup of tea; however, I was amazed my one of the sister's tambourine skills.  Have you ever seen a tambourine solo?  I can now say yes to this question and it was mesmerizing. I searched and searched for a video to show you, but I came up short.  This is as good as I could find on the internet.  In this video the McCrary Sisters are playing with the great Buddy Miller (who is featured).  It shows the sisters and toned down version on the tambourine solo.  Hopefully it will be enough to give you an idea.  Click this link --> here <-- and scroll to the bottom of the page.  It is the last video on the page.  Sorry, I am not able to embed it in my blog.

If you ever have the chance to see the McCrary Sisters then it is worth it if only to sit in amazement while Regina plays the tambourine. Also, I challenge you to film it and put it on YouTube so the rest of the world can say they have seen a tambourine solo!

This Week in Music - 6/18/13

I am officially worn out from Bonnaroo.  It threw me off so much that I forgot to blog everyday as promised, but it was awesome!  I was disappointed that I didn't get to see Mumford & Sons perform, but I understand why they cancelled (their bassist had brain surgery last week for a blood clot and is recovering well).

I was hoping for some recovery time, but no rest for me. Friends are coming into town on Wednesday!  I am hoping to take them to Music City Roots to experience the awesomeness, but that is probably it for me this week as far as music goes. I would really like to see Shakey Graves tonight, but my friends would probably appreciate it if I cleaned my house instead. I suppose I will choose to be a good hostess... but I will be listening to Shakey Graves while I clean

First Round of Performers Announced by the Americana Music Association

I had a feeling this year's Americana Music Festival & Conference was going to be amazing and, wow, was I right.  The Americana Music Association announced thirty-three of the artists that will be performing during their festival September 18-22.  Last year there were about 90 - 100 artists that were involved, so if this is just the beginning then I can't wait to see the end result.  The festival is held at multiple venues on four nights of the week, so you have to pick and choose which artists you are going to see.  2013 looks like it is probably going to require some tough decisions. I have put asterisks by the shows were you are likely to see me!

Black Prairie
Billy Bragg
Rosanne Cash
The Del-Lords
The Devil Makes Three
Sam Doores, Riley Downing & the Tumbleweeds
Frank Fairfield
Field Report *
John Fullbright * (saw him in concert recently and LOVED it.  Read about it here.)
Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors
Hurray for the Riff Raff *
The Infamous Stringdusters
Kruger Brothers
Pokey LaFarge
Nikki Lane
The Lone Bellow *
Luella & the Sun
JD McPherson
Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale
Aoife O'Donovan
Old Man Luedecke
Lindi Ortega
Darrell Scott & Tim O'Brien
Shakey Graves
Sturgill Simpson *
Sons of Fathers
Spirit Family Reunion *
Steelism
The Stray Birds

How do you feel about this first round of performer announcements?  Is there anyone you are incredibly excited to see?  Is there anyone you hope they will add to the line-up?

This Week In Music: 6/10/13

This sharing a computer thang has got to stop!  I work from home three days per week (mostly online) plus I have this blog.  It is difficult to share and coordinate schedules when I haven't had to in over 10 years!  Thus the delay in posting to my blog...  Does anyone have any suggestions on getting a new laptop or computer?  I would really love a Macbook Pro, BUT I just cannot afford it at this time and I cannot wait until I can. Ugh...

This week is Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN (45 min - hour southeast of Nashville).  Can you believe that I have NEVER been? There will be SO many great bands!  I am really excited.  I won't be able to go all four days, but I am looking forward to the time I can spend there.

Reaction to the Americana Music Nominations Plus Predictions

The Americana Music Honors & Awards Nominations were announced on May 14th in Los Angeles (yes, I know I am kind of late on this).  It was aired on AXS TV.  Unfortunately I don't get that channel, so I missed performances by Elizabeth Cook, Lisa Marie Presley, The Milk Carton Kids and Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale.  AXS TV did post The Milk Carton Kids performance on Youtube (click here).

[Something to remember is that the nominations are from members of the Americana Music Association.  To be a member, you must be an Americana artist or involved in the Americana Music industry.  Therefore, the following are nominated and voted on by the artist's peers, not their fans.   If it were the fans then we would most likely see a different ballot including more nominations for artists such as Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, or maybe even Brandi Carlile.]

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Buddy & Jim, Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale
Cheater's Game, Kelly Willis & Bruce Robison
From The Ground Up, John Fullbright
O' Be Joyful, Shovels & Rope
Old Yellow Moon, Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell

So many great albums!  I am especially excited to see that Shovels & Rope and John Fullbright have been nominated in this category.  I adore both their albums.  Old Yellow Moon is an excellent album that long-time Americana fans would really enjoy.  Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell are both big supporters of the Americana genre so that will bode well in their favor.

Prediction: Undoubtedly - Old Yellow Moon

ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Buddy Miller
Dwight Yoakam
Emmylou Harris
Richard Thompson

Although I love and respect them, I don't think that Buddy Miller and Emmylou Harris should be nominated in this category this year (wait and hear me out).  They both did projects with other people (thus their nominations in the Duo category) and did not do as much on their own.  But what can I say?  The members of the Americana Music Association clearly love them.

Prediction: Emmylou Harris is so loved by Americana that she would be the obvious winner; however, I think Dwight Yoakam might just sneak up and take this one.

EMERGING ARTIST OF THE YEAR
JD McPherson
John Fullbright
Milk Carton Kids
Shovels and Rope

I completely agree with this category. Of course, there are many emerging artists that I could add to this list, but I won't go there. John Fullbright has a grammy nomination this year, so he definitely deserves a nod. As you all should know, I have been completely enamored by Shovels & Rope for over a year, so I am so very happy and proud of them.

Prediction: They many not win all four of their nominated categories, but Shovels & Rope will definitely take this one home!

SONG OF THE YEAR
Birmingham - Shovels & Rope
Good things Happen to Bad People - Richard Thompson
Ho Hey - The Lumineers
North Side Gal - JD McPherson

I am prepared for some backlash what I am about to say... I'm not a big fan of Richard Thompson's song.  Although I think it is one of the best songs off his album and he is overall an incredible songwriter and guitar player, I do not think that it is one of the best in the Americana category for the year.  Just my opinion...
"Ho Hey" has been a huge played-out song, so I would have been surprised if that was not nominated.  By the way, if you haven't listed to The Lumineers album then you are missing out on songs that are even better than Ho Hey.  Personally, I love the charm of "Classy Girls".  My other two favorites are "Stubborn Love" and "Slow It Down".

Prediction: Deservedly "Ho Hey" (but I want "Birmingham" to win)

DUO/GROUP OF THE YEAR
Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis
Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale
Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell
Shovels & Rope

Shovels & Rope should be so proud to be nominated in this category amongst these Americana legends! Unfortunately, there is no way they will win this category.

Prediction: A sweep by Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell

INSTRUMENTALIST OF THE YEAR
Doug Lancio
Larry Campbell
Greg Leisz
Jay Bellerose
Mike Bub

Many albums would not be as good without the support of amazing session musicians.  All five of these are highly demanded.

Prediction: I have no idea... Maybe Larry Campbell since he is well-known for his ties to Levon Helm.

FYI:  The Americana Music Association announced that they will be revealing their first round of performers for the 2013 Americana Music Festival & Conference on JUNE 10th.  Yay!

CMA Festival - My First and Only Day

If you love country music and don't mind crowds then the CMA festival is PERFECT for you. There are several different stages of live music occurring at all times during the day. The "Fanfair" section is actually affordable at only $10 per day. That is the section where all the exhibit booths are and the main place to get autographs.

It rained off and on today, but otherwise the temperature was very comfortable outside and made for a more pleasant experience.  However, while walking back to the car it really starting down-pouring.  I was wearing white... I could have been in a wet t-shirt contest.  Sorry, no picture of that.  Due to the rain (and forgetting) I didn't take many pictures.  I didn't take any at all of the shows we saw (oops).  Here are some that I managed to snap.

The skyline and Riverfront

Oh, the crowds...

Pedestrian bridge

Riverfront during a surprise Hunter Hayes performance

Cumberland Park (beside the pedestrian bridge).  It has a cool water area for kids to play and other innovative features.

I know there are more pictures of "Nashville" then there are of the CMA festival, but I adore Nashville.  I wasn't born and raised here, but this is my hometown.  It was always meant to be.

Guilty Pleasures

I am too busy playing Candy Crush Saga and watching reality TV reruns to write a serious post. That's a good excuse, right?

Candy Crush Saga is a puzzle game (well I have to use my brain) that can be played on Facebook or through an app on your smartphone. I am not one for games, really, but I am totally addicted to this one. I have made it level 235 in about four months without buying any cheats. It is silly but I am totally proud of that.

I am not so proud of my mild addiction to dramatic reality shows. Years ago I refused to watch any reality shows except competition ones (I am a sucker for a good competition). Then I had two close friends that kept talking about these shows around me. They especially liked the ones on Bravo (you know the ones...). I felt so left out that I gave in and haven't been able to kick the habit.

OMG! Gotta go. Someone's yelling. Oh the drama!

My continued amazement with John Fullbright

I just got home from seeing John Fullbright in concert and all I can say is wow...

John Fullbright's album, From the Ground Up, is incredible and it may be hard to believe, but his performance is even better.  One thing I love about Americana artists in general is that they sound exactly like their album.  I love that the albums are raw.

It was obvious that Fullbright and his band enjoy playing together and were having fun.  Fullbright plays the piano, guitar and harmonica and does all extremely well.  I always get jealous of people that are multi-talented.  He was entertaining to watch.  His moves were unique to him and there is no way I can explain it.  Just go buy tickets to a local show now.  At one point the way he was moving his hips it looked like he was making love to his guitar.  The girl next to me was about to go crazy over it.  So funny!

When the concert was over, there were two guys behind me talking about how huge John Fullbright is going to be.  He may not be known by the masses, but he has already made some major accomplishments such as his Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album and being nominated for Americana Music Honors Emerging Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.  I think everyone should know who he is and love him!

I meant to take pictures, but left the house without my phone (I got fussed at by the Hubs for that by the way.  "What if something would have happened to you?!?").  I am really disappointed that I don't have even one good picture to share with you.  Oh well... I will just leave you with this video from the Crypt Sessions.

Please excuse my Emotional dump

I try to pick my battles in general.  I do things because I care instead of how it will benefit me.  Because of this, I am often taken advantage of and/or undervalued by people and I don't even realize it until it's too late. One day I just wake up, realize it and get angry.  Since I know this about myself then I try to be aware but I think I got snuck up on again.  I am just not sure how to handle the situation.
I know that I am not typically vulnerable in my posts... Yes, it is late at night and no, I am not drunk. Umm... Yeah... Please excuse my ramblings.

Anyone else deal with these issues?

This Week in Music: 6/3/13

This week is the CMA Music Festival in Nashville so much is centered around country music.  I like some of it, but you know, ehhh.  Even if you don't like country music, CMA week can still be fun.  Last year they had the Budweiser Clydsdale horses, a dog competition, and tons of freebies.  It is also fantastic for people watching.  Pure Hilarity!  I love to watch the people go nuts over seeing their favorite artists.  Add drunk people and heat and it doesn't get any better. The Hubs and I will probably go downtown one day just for kicks.

Also, this week... Shovels & Rope (and Dawes) will be at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.  I missed my chance to see them last year.  They are so impressive.  Since they have four Americana Music Award nominations, I am really hoping they will play at the Americana Honors & Awards show too (also held at the Ryman).
